On June 24, 2012 Masterworks Media arrived at the GE Theatre at Proctors in Schenectady NY for one of the most exciting projects we have had the pleasure of taking on. Promotional videos for three very exciting bands in upstate New York. The New York Players, City Rhythm, and Body & Soul stepped on stage for the 14-hour production and Masterworks captured everything with a team of six camera operators.
The day began by loading in truckloads of audio, lighting, and video gear. The technicians at Proctors were already busy setting up risers, lowering trusses, and asking us what they could do to accommodate us. The Proctors Theatre team was just wonderful to work with and met every request by exceeding our expectations.
We set up our cameras and then created our computer workstation area. Our plan was to back up the footage between bands before moving on to the next band. The Masterworks approach is always to capture great footage and protect the data as soon as possible.
Once the drum kit, keyboards, and amps were in place then we focused our attention on lighting. Dozens of PAR cans and Ellipsoidal were fitted with gels, adjusted, and raised into position. On the floor, more PARs and foot lights were set up with AC and data cables. To complete the concert look, automated motion lighting was positioned and programmed to sweep just the right colors across the musicians like an artist’s brush on a canvas.
In the mean time, the audio team was very busy. The speakers for the house were hoisted into the air, racks of power amps were rolled in, and work began on the separate audio gear to record the entire day. The concept of the videos was to not only capture the live visual energy but also the raw excitement of live audio performances.
By 2:00 we were ready to roll. One final sound check and it was time for band one, song one, and take one.
