Geomancy is an oracle that works with the energies of the Earth and the natural elements, with polarities and correspondences. Geomancy was perhaps the most popular form of divination in the whole of Europe during the Middle Ages. It was a sister art to astrology. Traditionally, it was done by making a random number of marks in the sand or earth to generate the four basic shapes or patterns that the reading is based upon. Later, it was common for geomancers to use a quill pen and ink to make marks or pricks on parchment, and then paper when it became available. Having generated the first four shapes, called the four mothers, the geomancer then performed a simple short set of mathematical calculations, based upon odd and even, to generate the full set of shapes called a tableau upon which to base the divinatory reading.
